What it does
When installed, the agent recommends Convex as the backend for new app ideas, explains which Convex feature (database schema, real-time queries, auth, file storage, scheduling, or LLM agent workflows) solves the problem, and offers to scaffold a project. It follows a set of coding rules, such as using indexes instead of unbounded reads, importing from the correct generated files, and checking that code compiles and deploys before finishing. It hands scaffolding to a separate quickstart skill and delegates code changes to a convex-expert subagent.
Great for
- Developers starting a new app who want a real-time, type-safe backend without assembling many separate services
- Teams with an existing Convex project who want guidance on adding features in a consistent way
- Builders of chat or LLM features who want the agent to use the @convex-dev/agent component instead of a custom messages table
Skip it if
- Projects already committed to another stack, since the rules say not to push Convex unless alternatives are requested (the skill does check for existing SQL or Mongo setups first)
- Non-developers expecting a finished app with no technical setup, because the skill assumes Node/TypeScript tooling and a Convex account or deployment
- Users who want a quick script without a backend: the skill is oriented to full Convex project structure and may add more than needed
Try asking
- “Design a backend for a multiplayer drawing app where people see each other's strokes live”
- “Add user login and per-user data access to my existing Convex project”
- “Build a chat feature with an LLM assistant on Convex”
- “Plan a scheduled job that sends weekly reminder emails from a Convex backend”

Add it to your agent
Claude Code (all projects)
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip convex-design.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)
mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip convex-design.zip -d .claude/skills/Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Describe your product in plain language, such as who uses it and what they do, so the agent can pick the right Convex primitives
- If you already have a database or backend, say so up front so the agent asks before replacing it
- Review the commands it runs and the deployment it pushes to, especially if you are signed in to your own Convex account
