What it does
This skill teaches an AI agent to audit how an Axiom logging account is used, to find data that is ingested but never queried, and to rank datasets by cost value. It can then deploy a cost dashboard and alert monitors that warn about ingest and query-cost spikes, and produce a report recommending which datasets to drop, sample, or keep. It works by running shell scripts and Axiom queries against your deployment.
Great for
- Engineering or platform teams paying for Axiom logs who want to cut ingest spend
- Operators who want budget alerts on daily ingest or query cost against a contract limit
Skip it if
- Teams not using Axiom, since every step depends on Axiom datasets and its API (the skill would not function)
- Anyone who cannot review scripts before running them, because the agent executes shell commands and changes monitors and dashboards in a live account; deleting or dropping data based on its recommendations could also lose logs needed for incidents or compliance
Try asking
- “Reduce our Axiom costs by finding datasets nobody queries”
- “Set up cost control for deployment prod with a 5 TB/day contract and Slack alerts”
- “Find waste in our application logs and write the analysis report”
- “Check whether our Axiom cost dashboard has drifted from the template”

Claude Code (all projects)
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip controlling-costs.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)
mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip controlling-costs.zip -d .claude/skills/Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Confirm the deployment name, audit dataset, and contract limit in TB/day before running anything, and review the scripts first.
- Run the discovery and analysis phases before deploying monitors, and review the report before deleting any dataset.
- Do not pipe script output to head or tail, and delete existing 'Cost Control:' monitors before re-running create-monitors to avoid duplicates.
