What it does

Once installed, the agent approaches competitor questions using a structured playbook: it builds positioning maps on two key customer dimensions, looks for white-space gaps, suggests ways to differentiate (product, service, brand, price), fills in competitor profile templates, and checks whether a proposed advantage is actually defensible. It also points to a reference file covering Porter's Five Forces and Blue Ocean Strategy before doing market-force or blue-ocean work. It is a method and template guide; it does not itself look up live competitor data.

Great for

  • Startup founders preparing a competitive section for a pitch or investor deck
  • Product or marketing managers reviewing how they are positioned against rivals
  • Students learning competitive strategy frameworks

Skip it if

  • Getting current competitor prices, funding or revenue figures: the skill only supplies a method and says nothing about live data sources, so the agent may produce outdated or invented facts unless you supply the data (risk of inaccurate claims in investor materials)
  • Legal or regulatory decisions, since it offers general frameworks only and no professional advice

Try asking

  • “Map my project management tool against five competitors on price and ease of use and find gaps”
  • “Write a positioning statement for my email marketing startup versus Klaviyo and Mailchimp”
  • “Run a Porter's Five Forces analysis for the meal-kit delivery market”
  • “Create a competitor profile template and a monitoring cadence for my SaaS category”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Competitive Landscape AnalysisInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    competitive-landscape.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip competitive-landscape.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip competitive-landscape.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Provide your own competitor data (pricing pages, reviews, notes) in the conversation, because the skill does not fetch it and the agent may otherwise guess
  • Ask the agent to label which claims come from your data versus its general knowledge before using them in a pitch
  • Use the defensibility test (can competitors copy this in under two years?) to pressure-test each advantage the agent proposes
