What it does

This skill gives an AI coding agent guidance on organising a group of helper agents working in parallel on one task. Once installed, the agent can pick a team size based on task complexity, choose from preset teams such as review, debug, feature, research, security, and migration, and select the right agent type so each helper has the tools it needs. It also explains how to set the display mode (tmux, iTerm2, or in-process) for teammates.

Great for

  • Developers using Claude Code's Agent Teams feature who want to split work across several agents
  • Engineers planning a code review, bug investigation, or migration that could be done in parallel
  • Teams wanting a consistent rule of thumb for how many agents to spawn

Skip it if

  • Single-agent tasks or small edits, where a team adds overhead and is unnecessary
  • Non-developers without Claude Code's Agent Teams feature, since the guidance assumes its subagent types and settings file
  • Anyone expecting the skill to run code itself; it provides guidance only and the files do not include executable scripts

Try asking

  • “How many agents should I spawn to review this pull request across security and performance?”
  • “Set up a debug team to test three possible root causes for this intermittent failure.”
  • “Which subagent_type should I use for a teammate who needs to edit files?”
  • “Design a custom team for a security audit of our authentication code.”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Team Composition PatternsInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 3 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    team-composition-patterns.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip team-composition-patterns.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip team-composition-patterns.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Start with the smallest team that covers all required dimensions, as the skill recommends, since extra teammates add coordination cost.
  • Give each implementer clear file ownership so agents do not edit the same files.
  • Never assign write tasks to read-only agent types such as Explore or Plan.
