What it does

This skill walks a lawyer through a first-time setup interview about how their IP practice works, such as enforcement thresholds, approval chains, brand watch settings and open-source rules. It reads any practice documents they share, then writes a plain-language profile file to their plugin config folder. Other skills in the same IP legal plugin read that profile before acting, so their output matches the practice's own positions. It can also re-check which external tools (IP management system, research tools, Slack) are actually connected.

Great for

  • An IP lawyer or legal team installing the claude-for-legal IP plugin for the first time
  • Someone re-onboarding after their enforcement posture or practice setup has changed (using --redo)
  • A user who has just connected or disconnected an integration and wants the plugin to notice (using --check-integrations)

Skip it if

  • Substituting for legal judgment: the profile reflects what the user says and what their documents contain, not verified legal advice
  • Users who are not running this inside the claude-for-legal IP plugin, since it depends on that plugin's template and other skills
  • Anyone wanting to skip the interview on a fresh install, because the skill is designed to be the first thing run, and skipping it leaves other skills without a practice profile

Try asking

  • “/ip-legal:cold-start-interview”
  • “/ip-legal:cold-start-interview --redo”
  • “/ip-legal:cold-start-interview --check-integrations”

  • Have your portfolio export, brand guidelines, cease-and-desist template, enforcement playbook and OSS policy ready so the agent can extract real positions instead of guessing
  • Install user-scoped rather than project-scoped if your documents live outside the current project folder, as the skill itself advises
  • Review the generated CLAUDE.md file and correct anything it misheard, since the file is meant to be edited in plain English
