What it does

This skill gives an AI agent a command-line tool for Unreal Engine performance profiling with Unreal Insights. Once installed, the agent can start or stop trace captures of a game or editor, find and open trace files, keep the Unreal Insights viewer open for you, and export timing and counter data to CSV files or produce a summary of top slow functions and hotspots. It is aimed at Windows users who have Unreal Engine installed.

Great for

  • Unreal Engine developers who want an agent to help diagnose frame time, thread or render hotspots
  • Technical artists or engineers who need repeatable CSV exports of timer and counter data from traces
  • Teams automating performance captures as part of a build or test workflow on Windows

Skip it if

  • Users not on Windows, since the skill is documented as Windows-first (v1) and needs UnrealInsights.exe
  • Users without an Unreal Engine install, because the tool depends on Unreal's own binaries and cannot analyse traces alone
  • Running captures on shared or production machines without review, because it launches Unreal processes and can stop running ones (capture start with --replace stops the previous process)

Try asking

  • “Start a profiling capture of my MyGame project now and stop it after I reproduce the stutter”
  • “Export timer statistics and counter values from my latest trace to CSV”
  • “Summarize the top GameThread and RenderThread hotspots in session.utrace”
  • “Open the most recent trace in Unreal Insights so I can inspect it visually”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Unreal Insights Trace ToolInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    cli-anything-unrealinsights.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip cli-anything-unrealinsights.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip cli-anything-unrealinsights.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Use --json output so the agent can read results reliably, and check succeeded and output_status fields before trusting an export
  • Point the tool at an explicit engine root or set UNREALINSIGHTS_EXE if you have several Unreal versions or a source-built engine
  • Review the project path and engine root before running capture commands, since they launch Unreal processes on your machine
