What it does

This skill teaches an AI agent to use the MacroCLI command-line tool, which packages repeated GUI workflows as named, parameterized macros. Instead of clicking through an interface, the agent runs commands like macro list, macro info and macro run, and the MacroCLI runtime chooses how to carry out each step (a native command, a file edit, accessibility/keyboard control, or replay of recorded GUI actions). The skill also tells the agent to dry-run first, use JSON output, and check the success field before trusting a result.

Great for

  • Developers who want an agent to automate repeatable desktop or file workflows through a stable CLI
  • Teams that have already defined MacroCLI macro YAML files and want agents to call them safely
  • Operators who need dry-run previews before side-effectful automation runs

Skip it if

  • Users who have not installed and set up the MacroCLI package, since the skill does nothing without it
  • Unattended use on machines with important data, because macros can drive real GUI actions and run arbitrary commands (native_api runs shell commands) that can change files
  • Situations needing guaranteed rollback: the file says reversibility depends on each macro's agent_hints, which are not verified here

Try asking

  • “List the macros available in this MacroCLI setup and tell me which ones export files”
  • “Check the parameters for the transform_json macro, then dry-run it on /tmp/config.json”
  • “Run the export_file macro to write a result to /tmp/result.txt and report any error”
  • “Show the available execution backends in this environment and whether each one works”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    skills.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip skills.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip skills.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Always run macro info and a dry-run before a real macro run, and use absolute paths for file parameters
  • Review each macro's YAML steps and agent_hints (danger_level, side_effects) before allowing execution, since the skill itself does not verify them
  • Check the success field in the JSON output rather than relying on exit code alone
