What it does

This skill teaches an AI agent how to operate a Firefly III personal finance app through a command-line tool called cli-anything-firefly-iii. Once installed, the agent can list, create, update and delete accounts, transactions, budgets, bills, categories, tags, piggy banks and rules, and can pull summaries and exports, instead of you clicking through the web interface. It needs your own running Firefly III server and an access token to work.

Great for

  • People who self-host Firefly III and want an AI assistant to help record or review transactions
  • Developers scripting or automating personal finance workflows against the Firefly III API
  • Users who want quick summaries or searches of budgets and bills in plain language

Skip it if

  • Users without a running Firefly III instance, since the skill only talks to an existing server and cannot provide finance data on its own
  • Anyone who does not want an agent to change their financial records, because delete and update commands can permanently alter or remove data
  • Sharing a token broadly on shared or untrusted machines, since the token grants access to the full account

Try asking

  • “List my asset accounts and show their current balances”
  • “Create a transaction for a 50 dollar grocery purchase from account 1 in the Food category”
  • “Show all budget limits for January 2024 and flag any that are exceeded”
  • “Create a monthly Netflix bill of 15.99 and list all bills due this month”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    skills.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip skills.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip skills.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Use a dedicated Personal Access Token with the narrowest scope you can, and revoke it when no longer needed
  • Ask the agent to list or show records before asking it to update or delete, and confirm IDs first
  • Keep a backup or export of your Firefly III data before letting an agent make bulk changes
