What it does

When you are about to deploy infrastructure to Microsoft Azure, this skill makes the AI agent check your Bicep template files first. It runs Azure's own tools to catch syntax errors, preview what would be created, changed or deleted, and check whether your account has the permissions needed. It then writes a preflight-report.md file in your project summarising the issues and next steps.

Great for

  • Developers deploying Bicep infrastructure to Azure who want a preview before running a deployment
  • Teams using the Azure Developer CLI (azd) who want to check changes before running azd provision or azd up

Skip it if

  • Projects that do not use Bicep or Azure (the skill only covers Bicep templates on Azure), so it will not help with Terraform or other clouds
  • Anyone expecting it to deploy or fix resources: it only validates and reports, but running the underlying Azure commands against a live subscription can still have side effects on your account

Try asking

  • “Validate my Bicep deployment before I run it”
  • “Run a what-if on infra/main.bicep for the staging resource group”
  • “Check whether I have permission to deploy this azd project”
  • “Prepare for azd provision and tell me what will change”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Azure Deployment PreflightInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 4 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    azure-deployment-preflight.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip azure-deployment-preflight.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip azure-deployment-preflight.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Make sure you are logged in to the correct Azure subscription before the agent runs, since what-if reads your live environment
  • Provide the resource group, location and environment name up front so the agent does not have to guess
  • Review preflight-report.md yourself; the what-if output is a preview and should be checked before any real deployment
