What it does

This skill makes the agent check the skills you have already installed against their source repositories to see whether a newer commit exists. When it finds one, it shows you a diff of the changes, highlights any changes to hooks, MCP server configuration, tool permissions, network access, or the skill's stated purpose, and waits for your explicit approval before applying anything. It also runs a security re-scan of the new version and refuses updates that look malicious, and it can flag skills whose reference material has gone past a freshness window without re-verification.

Great for

  • Legal teams or developers who use several community skills from the claude-for-legal repository and want to know when they change
  • Users who want to review every change before a skill update touches their environment
  • Maintainers of a skill registry who want a documented update-review process

Skip it if

  • Users who want updates applied automatically without review, since the skill is designed to block that (the workflow requires approval and has no override for refused updates)
  • Anyone expecting it to verify the legal accuracy of a skill's content, since it checks commits, diffs and freshness dates rather than legal correctness
  • Users without the skills-qa scanner or the referenced install log and config files, since much of the workflow depends on them and may not work as described

Try asking

  • “Check for updates to my installed skills”
  • “Update my skills, but show me the diff first”
  • “Anything new for my installed skills?”
  • “Notify me of skill updates without applying them”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Community Skill Auto-UpdaterInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    auto-updater.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip auto-updater.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip auto-updater.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Review the hooks and MCP diffs carefully, since those can run commands or use your credentials.
  • Keep the install log intact, because the freshness checks rely on values recorded at install time rather than live frontmatter.
  • Use read-only scan mode where available, as the skill recommends for restrictive allowlist setups.
