What it does

Atlas is a desktop app that stores its user preferences in a human-editable config.toml file. With this skill installed, the agent knows where that file lives, reads its inline comments to learn what each setting allows, explains a proposed change to you, and then edits only the specific line you asked about. It writes the change atomically (to a temp file, then renamed over the original) and re-reads the file to confirm. It also knows to leave alone credentials, other Atlas state files, your shell profile, and Atlas's own binary or updates, and it can handle per-project overrides in a project's .atlas/config.toml.

Great for

  • Atlas users who want to change preferences by asking the agent instead of editing the file by hand
  • Developers maintaining Atlas configurations across projects who want a careful, read-first editing workflow

Skip it if

  • Changing API keys or secrets: the skill explicitly refuses to write credentials, which live in the user's shell profile, so it cannot help with them.
  • Updating or reinstalling Atlas itself: the skill is limited to preferences and excludes self-updates and binaries.
  • Users who have not installed Atlas: if the config file does not exist, the skill reports that rather than creating defaults, so it has little use without a running Atlas install.

Try asking

  • “Turn off inline git blame in Atlas and show me what the setting does first.”
  • “Check my Atlas config.toml and tell me which preferences are currently set.”
  • “Make this project use a different setting than my global Atlas preference, using the project's .atlas/config.toml.”
  • “Restore my Atlas config.toml to the content it had before your last edit.”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Atlas Settings EditorInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    atlas-self-configure.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip atlas-self-configure.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip atlas-self-configure.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Ask for one setting at a time so the agent can explain each change against its inline comment before writing.
  • If Atlas rejects an edit, the file stays invalid and Atlas's UI settings writes are blocked; ask the agent to restore the exact prior content it read.
  • Review the proposed key, old value, and new value the agent states before confirming, since the skill is designed to explain changes first.
