What it does

When installed, the agent runs a free-form brainstorming interview with you about whatever you want to write, and saves every useful sentence, quote, anecdote or half-formed idea as a separate 'fragment' in one markdown file. It deliberately avoids outlines or article structure at this stage. It also tries to coin a memorable 'leading word' for any recurring idea, which can later anchor a full piece.

Great for

  • Writers who have lots of ideas but no structure yet and want raw material collected
  • Authors preparing a talk, essay or book who want to mine their own notes before outlining
  • Anyone who wants an agent to interview them and keep a running notes file

Skip it if

  • People who want a finished draft, outline or article structure right away, since the skill explicitly refuses to impose structure
  • Sensitive or confidential brainstorming, because everything said is written into a file on disk
  • Users who want the agent to edit an existing document rather than build a fresh fragment file

Try asking

  • “Let's explore a talk I'm giving on remote work. Interview me and capture fragments as we go.”
  • “I want to write about why my team's code reviews feel slow. Ask me questions and save anything good.”
  • “Start a fragment file for my newsletter ideas and keep appending as I talk.”
  • “Cut the last fragment and merge the two quotes about burnout.”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Writing Fragments ExplorerInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    writing-fragments.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip writing-fragments.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip writing-fragments.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give the file path at the start to avoid being asked; otherwise the agent will ask once where to save.
  • Use follow-up instructions like 'rewrite that one sharper' or 'merge those two' to refine fragments as they accumulate.
  • Expect the agent to append silently, so re-check the file on disk if you want to see the current state.
