What it does

It teaches an AI agent to save notes about its work into a shared local vault of Markdown files, then search that vault and hand tasks to other agents such as Codex, Cursor or Claude. Before reusing a saved note, the agent is told to treat it as unverified evidence and check it against the repository or other authoritative sources. The skill itself is only instructions; the actual vault commands come from a separate npm package.

Great for

  • Developers who switch between several AI coding agents on the same repository and want them to share context
  • Teams that want reviewable, version-controlled notes about project decisions and handoffs
  • Anyone who needs an agent to resume another agent's unfinished task

Skip it if

  • Storing secrets or credentials: the skill forbids it and the runtime only catches known secret patterns, so it is a backstop, not a safe vault (risk of leaking sensitive data).
  • Replacing a task tracker or formal project documentation: the skill says memory is not for this, so relying on it for official status can lead to stale or wrong decisions.
  • Users who expect it to work immediately after installing the skill alone: without the separate ecc-universal npm runtime, the CLI and MCP commands will not exist.

Try asking

  • “Save a summary of the current authentication migration status so another agent can pick it up later.”
  • “Search the vault for prior decisions about the database schema before making a new one.”
  • “Write a handoff from Codex to Claude describing the remaining work and next action.”
  • “Run a doctor check on the memory vault before committing team memories to Git.”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Unified Memory VaultInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    unified-memory.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip unified-memory.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip unified-memory.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Install the ecc-universal npm runtime first, then run ecc memory --help to confirm the commands exist.
  • Keep the project-scope .gitignore unchanged, since the vault refuses to write if it has unexpected content.
  • Treat recalled memories as leads to verify, and request the user scope only when you explicitly need it.
