What it does

When invoked, the agent reads your project and extracts the business concepts behind the code: domains, business flows and process steps. If a knowledge graph already exists from the companion /understand command, it derives this from that graph without rescanning files. Otherwise it runs a lightweight scan of the file tree, entry points and sampled source files. The result is an interactive horizontal flow graph shown in the Understand-Anything dashboard.

Great for

  • Engineers onboarding onto an unfamiliar codebase who want a business-level map rather than file-level detail
  • Teams documenting how a product's processes fit together
  • People already using the /understand knowledge graph who want a domain view of it

Skip it if

  • Very small projects, where the scan adds little value over reading the code directly
  • Projects that need verified business documentation, since the output is inferred from code and may omit recent changes unless the graph is refreshed

Try asking

  • “/understand-domain”
  • “/understand-domain --full”
  • “Map the business domains and main process flows in this repository”
  • “Refresh the domain flow graph after a large refactor”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Understand DomainInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    understand-domain.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip understand-domain.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip understand-domain.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Run /understand first so the domain view is derived from an up-to-date knowledge graph instead of a lightweight scan
  • Use --full if you have changed many files since the last graph was built
  • Review the generated domain names and flows, since they are inferred from code and may not match business terminology
