What it does
Once installed, when you ask a question about a codebase, the agent searches a saved map of the project (a knowledge graph stored as JSON in .ua/ or .understand-anything/) instead of reading every file. It finds the relevant files, functions and their connections, then answers with references to real code locations. It also checks whether the map is out of date compared with recent git changes and warns you to rebuild it with /understand if so.
Great for
- Developers getting oriented in an unfamiliar or large codebase
- Engineers who already ran /understand and want faster answers about structure and dependencies
- Teams who want quick answers about how modules, services, or layers connect
Skip it if
- Projects where /understand has never been run, since there is no graph to search (the skill will just tell you to run it first)
- Questions needing live or runtime behaviour, because the graph is a static snapshot that may miss recent changes
- Use where the graph is stale: warnings appear, but answers may omit recent edits until the graph is refreshed
Try asking
- “/understand-chat how does authentication flow through the services?”
- “/understand-chat which files depend on the database config?”
- “/understand-chat what calls the payment processing function?”
- “/understand-chat give me an overview of the architectural layers in this project”
Install in 3 steps
- 1
Download the skill
The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.
understand-chat.zip - 2
Add it to your agent
Claude Code (all projects)
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip understand-chat.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)
mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip understand-chat.zip -d .claude/skills/Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Run /understand first and re-run it after significant code changes so the graph stays current
- Use specific keywords (function or file names) in your question, since the skill searches node names, summaries and tags
- Ask about one component at a time for more precise, less noisy answers
