What it does

Once installed, the agent stops simply agreeing with you and instead challenges your plan, decision or proposal using five structured methods: questioning hidden assumptions, arguing the opposing side, imagining how the plan could fail, red-teaming it as an adversary would, and auditing whether the evidence really supports your conclusion. It first restates your position in its strongest form, asks you which approach you want, then presents a few of the strongest objections, waits for your response, and finally helps you produce a stronger version of the idea with next steps.

Great for

  • Founders or managers pressure-testing a business plan or strategy before committing money or time
  • Engineers stress-testing an architecture or technology choice before implementation
  • Anyone who wants a devil's advocate to find blind spots in a decision

Skip it if

  • Situations needing domain-specific technical verification, since it works from general critical-reasoning methods and the skill warns against overriding domain expertise with generic skepticism
  • Emotionally sensitive personal decisions where blunt challenge may not help, as its stated style is deliberately unbound and direct
  • Users wanting quick agreement or validation, since the method is designed to push back

Try asking

  • “Play devil's advocate on my plan to move our backend from Python to Go next quarter”
  • “Run a pre-mortem on our product launch scheduled for March”
  • “Red team this pricing proposal and tell me how a competitor could exploit it”
  • “Audit whether the evidence actually supports my claim that churn dropped because of the new onboarding”

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 7 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    the-fool.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip the-fool.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip the-fool.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give the agent concrete context (the plan, numbers, constraints) so challenges are specific rather than generic
  • Choose a mode deliberately: use pre-mortem for failure risks, red team for adversarial risks, and evidence audit for claims backed by data
  • Engage with the challenges the agent raises; the skill is designed to synthesize only after your response
