What it does

This skill gives an AI agent specialized know-how for Atlassian tools such as Jira (issue tracking) and Confluence (team wiki). Once installed, the agent knows how to write Jira Query Language (JQL) and Confluence Query Language (CQL) searches, create and update tickets, manage sprints and backlogs, and connect to Atlassian through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standard way for AI tools to reach outside services. It also explains authentication options and suggests safety habits such as testing with a small query first and confirming before bulk changes.

Great for

  • Developers or project managers who want an agent to pull Jira issues or Confluence pages with precise queries
  • Teams setting up an Atlassian MCP connection for Claude Code or another agent
  • Engineers debugging Atlassian API or authentication problems

Skip it if

  • People who only need to read a few tickets manually, since the setup adds complexity for little gain
  • Unattended bulk edits to production Jira data: the skill asks for confirmation, but a mistaken instruction could still change many records if confirmation is skipped
  • Organisations that have not approved OAuth or API token use, since the skill requires storing credentials

Try asking

  • “Write a JQL query to find all open bugs in project PROJ created in the last week, starting with a maxResults=1 check”
  • “Help me set up the official Atlassian Cloud MCP server in Claude Code and sign in with OAuth”
  • “Find Confluence pages in the ENG space that mention deployment runbook and list them by last modified date”
  • “Create Jira tickets from the action items in these meeting notes, after showing me a preview”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Atlassian MCP ExpertInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 6 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    atlassian-mcp.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip atlassian-mcp.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip atlassian-mcp.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give the agent a read-only task first to confirm permissions before asking for any writes
  • Store API tokens in environment variables or a secrets manager, never in prompts or config files committed to git
  • Check which MCP server you use, since tool names differ between the official Atlassian server and community servers
