What it does

This is an instruction file that teaches an AI agent how to design classroom lessons in the OpenMAIC system so that social-emotional skills (self-awareness, self-management, empathy, collaboration, responsible decisions) are practiced alongside the main subject concept, without replacing it. It guides the agent to name a concept goal and an SEL goal for each lesson, place SEL moments in slides and interactive pages, and include reflection that covers both what was learned and which social-emotional skill was practiced. It also sets safety limits: no forced disclosure of personal or emotional history, no psychological diagnosis, and no shaming or public ranking.

Great for

  • Teachers or course designers using OpenMAIC who want lessons that also build emotional and collaboration skills
  • Developers building AI-generated classroom content who need a consistent SEL design pattern
  • Curriculum designers who want SEL woven into subject lessons rather than taught as a separate class

Skip it if

  • Standalone counseling, homeroom, or psychology lessons where SEL is the main content, because the file explicitly excludes this use and says to confirm scope first
  • Use with students who may be in emotional distress without a qualified adult involved, since the skill asks for emotional reflection prompts that could surface sensitive feelings

Try asking

  • “Create a physics lesson on energy conservation that includes a self-awareness check-in at the start and a reflection on collaboration”
  • “Add empathy-building perspective-taking to a history lesson on a contested historical event”
  • “Design an interactive math practice page with clear failure, feedback, and retry paths that build resilience”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Social-Emotional Learning in LessonsInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    social-emotional-learning.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip social-emotional-learning.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip social-emotional-learning.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Pick one or two SEL skills that fit the concept task instead of trying to cover all four in one lesson
  • Check that every SEL element names the concept it serves; remove any that cannot answer that question
  • Keep emotional prompts optional and non-judgmental, and avoid asking students to share personal trauma or private experiences
