What it does

This skill teaches an AI agent how to use the sentence-transformers Python library to convert sentences and documents into numerical vectors (embeddings) that capture meaning. Once installed, the agent can write code that loads pre-trained models, compares how similar texts are, runs semantic search over a collection, fine-tunes a model, and plugs embeddings into LangChain or LlamaIndex pipelines. The models run locally rather than through a paid API.

Great for

  • Developers building a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) or semantic search feature who want local embeddings
  • Data people clustering or comparing large sets of text without per-call API costs
  • Teams needing multilingual text embeddings

Skip it if

  • Non-programmers who want a finished search app; the skill produces Python code that must be installed and run (reason: it requires a Python environment)
  • Projects that need the highest possible quality from a managed service; the file itself points to OpenAI or Cohere for that (reason: local models may trail them)
  • Sensitive-data work without checking model licences and sources; models are downloaded from Hugging Face and some domain models may have their own terms (reason: provenance varies)

Try asking

  • “Write Python code that embeds my product descriptions and finds the most similar ones to a search query”
  • “Set up a local embedding model with LangChain and Chroma for my document Q&A app”
  • “Fine-tune a sentence-transformers model on my pairs of similar and dissimilar sentences”
  • “Compare multilingual customer reviews for semantic similarity using a multilingual model”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    sentence-transformers.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip sentence-transformers.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip sentence-transformers.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Start with all-MiniLM-L6-v2 for a fast baseline, then test larger models on your own data since quality varies by task
  • Check the licence and intended use of any domain-specific model before using it in a commercial or sensitive project
  • Ask the agent to review the generated code before running it, especially the fine-tuning and file-saving steps
