What it does

Tokenizers are the step that splits text into the small pieces (tokens) that language models read. With this skill installed, the agent can write working code using the HuggingFace tokenizers library to load pretrained tokenizers, encode and decode text, pad and truncate batches, track which characters each token came from, and train new BPE, WordPiece or Unigram vocabularies on your own corpus. It is a reference guide that steers the agent toward correct, fast tokenization code.

Great for

  • Machine learning engineers building NLP pipelines who need to tokenize large text datasets quickly
  • Researchers training a custom tokenizer for a new language or domain
  • Developers who need token-to-character alignment for tasks like span labelling or highlighting

Skip it if

  • Simple one-off tokenization where the transformers library or tiktoken already does the job; the skill itself notes these alternatives
  • Anyone expecting the speed figures to be guaranteed: the '<20 seconds per GB' and '10-100x' claims are stated in the file without independent benchmarks shown in the files
  • Production deployments without review, since generated training code and saved tokenizer files should be checked before use on important data

Try asking

  • “Train a custom BPE tokenizer with 30000 tokens on my 500MB corpus and save it to a JSON file”
  • “Load bert-base-uncased and show me the token IDs and offsets for this sentence”
  • “Set up batch encoding with padding and truncation for my classification dataset”
  • “Explain the difference between BPE and WordPiece and write a WordPiece trainer for my text”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 5 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    huggingface-tokenizers.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip huggingface-tokenizers.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip huggingface-tokenizers.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give the agent the exact file paths and corpus size so it picks the right trainer and vocabulary size
  • Ask the agent to check the saved tokenizer by encoding and decoding a few sample sentences before relying on it
  • Pick the algorithm that matches your target model (for example WordPiece for BERT-style models, BPE for GPT-style models) so the vocabulary is compatible
