What it does

Once installed, the agent can combine several welfare measurements (such as body weight, temperature, clinical scores and biomarkers) for each animal into a single relative severity score, using a reference group as the comparison scale. It can also estimate candidate severity zones from the data and run an exploratory ARIMA forecast of the score at a chosen future time. It is a calculation aid for scientific reporting, not a decision-maker about animal welfare or humane endpoints.

Great for

  • Researchers in animal studies writing severity or refinement sections of welfare reports
  • Animal welfare officers or 3Rs analysts comparing severity across groups or models
  • Developers who want a documented Python implementation of the RELSA method

Skip it if

  • Deciding whether an animal has reached a humane endpoint: the forecasts are exploratory and cannot override observed welfare signs or approved criteria
  • Regulatory severity grading under EU Directive 2010/63/EU: the thresholds are model-specific candidate zones, not official categories
  • Time-to-death or probability-of-death predictions: the forecast estimates a score at a fixed time only

Try asking

  • “Compute a RELSA severity score per animal per day from my cohort CSV, treating clinical score and IL-6 as turned variables”
  • “Save a reference set from my control group and reuse it so later cohorts stay on the same scale”
  • “Estimate candidate severity zones from my RELSA scores using kernel density minima”
  • “Forecast each mouse's severity score at day 7 and report RMSE and prediction interval coverage”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 9 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    relsa-severity-assessment.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip relsa-severity-assessment.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip relsa-severity-assessment.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Declare directionality explicitly with the turned option for variables that rise under worsening, since a wrong declaration silently drops the variable
  • Choose and document the reference set and save it with save-reference so later cohorts are comparable
  • Treat forecasts and zones as exploratory and state the reference set, bandwidth and boundaries in any report
