What it does
Obsidian is a note-taking app that stores notes as files in a folder called a vault. This skill teaches an AI agent to use Obsidian's own command-line tool to work with a note vault that is already open on the computer: reading notes, creating or appending text, searching, managing tasks, properties, tags and backlinks, and handling daily notes. For people building Obsidian plugins or themes, it also covers reloading a plugin, checking errors and console output, taking screenshots, inspecting the interface, and running JavaScript inside the app.
Great for
- Obsidian users who want an AI assistant to file, search or update notes from the terminal or chat
- Plugin and theme developers who want an agent to reload, test and debug their work inside Obsidian
- People who keep daily notes or task lists in Obsidian and want quick command-line edits
Skip it if
- Users who do not have Obsidian installed or running, since the skill requires the app to be open. Obsidian is not needed only if you work on files directly.
- Anyone who wants the agent to edit an important vault without review, because commands write directly to notes and can overwrite content when the overwrite flag is used.
- Sensitive environments where running arbitrary JavaScript inside the app via the eval command is not acceptable, since that command can read or change anything the app can access.
Try asking
- “Search my Obsidian vault for notes mentioning 'quarterly goals' and list the top 10”
- “Append a new task '- [ ] Call the accountant' to today's daily note”
- “Reload my plugin called my-plugin and show me any errors in the developer console”
- “Take a screenshot of the workspace and check the DOM for a button I just styled”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Test on a copy or a non-critical vault first, especially before using overwrite or eval commands.
- Run obsidian help inside your setup to see the current command list, since the skill defers to it as the source of truth.
- Name the file or vault explicitly (file= or vault=) so the agent does not act on the wrong note, since the default is the active or most recently focused vault.
