What it does

This skill teaches the agent to use the Knap command-line tool, which fills Markdown templates with variables, filters, and simple logic. Once installed, the agent can turn JSON or CSV data into notes, generate many Markdown files from a spreadsheet-like file, or format web page content extracted by Defuddle into a note. It also explains how to validate templates and perform dry runs before writing files.

Great for

  • Obsidian or note-taking users who want to generate many notes from a CSV or JSON file
  • Developers building repeatable Markdown output from structured data
  • Users who pipe web page content from Defuddle into a templated note

Skip it if

  • Simple one-off Markdown writing, where the agent can just write the file directly (the extra tool adds setup for no benefit)
  • Anyone who wants Web Clipper browser features, since Knap does not supply browser variables, selectors, or DOM-based filters
  • Overwriting important existing notes with batch runs, since --overwrite replaces files without a backup step

Try asking

  • “Apply my article template to this JSON file and save it as note.md”
  • “Turn this CSV of books into one Markdown note per row in the notes folder”
  • “Clip https://example.com/article with Defuddle and format it into my note template”
  • “Dry-run a batch render of these JSON files so I can see output paths before writing”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    knap.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip knap.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip knap.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Run knap validate and a dry run with --dry-run before batch rendering, so you can see the output paths first
  • Use --filename with safe_name for names built from data, and keep output inside a dedicated folder
  • Pass nested data as JSON with --data-json or --data, since --set only handles strings
