What it does

When installed, the agent acts as a metrics strategist: it first classifies your business into one of three 'games' (Attention, Transaction or Productivity), then proposes a single North Star Metric, a customer-centric number that reflects the value customers get and predicts long-term success. It checks that candidate against seven criteria (easy to understand, customer-centric, sustainable, vision-aligned, quantitative, actionable, leading indicator) and lists 3-5 input metrics that drive it. The skill is text-only guidance; it does not connect to your data.

Great for

  • Founders or product leads choosing what their company should measure and optimize
  • Product managers setting up an OKR or metrics framework and needing a structured starting point
  • Teams debating between several candidate metrics and wanting them evaluated against clear criteria

Skip it if

  • Companies that need a finished dashboard or live data analysis: the skill only reasons from the context you type, it does not pull metrics from your systems
  • Situations where you want a revenue or LTV number as the main goal: the skill itself says a North Star should be customer-centric, not purely financial, so it will push back on that

Try asking

  • “Use the north star metric skill to help me pick a North Star for my meditation app that sells annual subscriptions.”
  • “What should our North Star metric be for a two-sided marketplace connecting freelance designers and clients?”
  • “Classify my B2B note-taking tool as an attention, transaction or productivity game and suggest input metrics.”
  • “Evaluate these three candidate North Star metrics against the seven criteria: weekly active teams, documents shared, and monthly revenue.”

Get better results

  • Describe your business model, revenue model, vision and the customer value you deliver, since the skill asks for these details and output quality depends on them.
  • Share the metrics you already track so input metrics can be tied to real numbers rather than generic examples.
  • Treat the output as a hypothesis to test: the skill's framework is one perspective, so validate the chosen metric with your own customer data.
