What it does
This skill gives an AI agent guidance for making software observable: adding structured logs, Prometheus metrics, and OpenTelemetry traces, writing alert rules and Grafana dashboards, running load tests with k6 or Artillery, profiling CPU and memory, and forecasting capacity. Once installed, the agent follows a workflow (assess, instrument, collect, visualize, alert) and includes code examples in Node.js, YAML and JavaScript, plus reference notes for each topic.
Great for
- Developers adding monitoring or tracing to a Node.js or similar service
- Engineers setting up a Prometheus and Grafana stack and writing alert rules
- Teams preparing load tests or investigating production performance problems
Skip it if
- Non-technical users who need a finished monitoring product; the output is code and configuration that must be deployed and checked by someone who understands it
- Teams that must follow a different observability vendor or standard, since the examples focus on Prometheus, Grafana, Pino and OpenTelemetry (DataDog is only named as a trigger)
- Production systems without review: generated alert rules and load tests can cause alert floods or load on live services if applied unchecked
Try asking
- “Add structured JSON logging with request IDs to my Express API”
- “Write Prometheus alerting rules for a high error rate on my orders endpoint”
- “Create a k6 load test that ramps to 50 users and checks p95 latency under 500 ms”
- “Plan capacity for my service with traffic growing 3x next year”

Add it to your agent
Claude Code (all projects)
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip monitoring-expert.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)
mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip monitoring-expert.zip -d .claude/skills/Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Review generated alert thresholds and load test targets against your real traffic before deploying them
- Ask the agent to check that no sensitive fields (tokens, passwords, personal data) end up in logs, since the skill's own rules require this
- Point the agent at a specific reference file, such as alerting-rules or performance-testing, when you need detail on one topic
