What it does
Once installed, the agent gets guidance for designing systems made of many small, independently deployed services. It can suggest how to split a large application into services, choose between direct request/response calls and event-based messaging, handle data ownership and multi-step transactions (such as the saga pattern), and add resilience patterns like circuit breakers, retries with backoff, and bulkheads. The skill is a set of written instructions and reference notes; it does not run code or change your systems on its own.
Great for
- Engineers planning to break a monolithic application into microservices
- Architects reviewing service boundaries and inter-service communication choices
- Teams designing event-driven systems who want a checklist of resilience patterns
Skip it if
- Small applications or single-team projects where a monolith is simpler; the skill leans toward distributed design, which adds operational cost
- Production incident response or specific code debugging, since the skill gives general patterns rather than analysis of your system
Try asking
- “Help me decompose our monolithic order system into microservices by business capability”
- “Compare REST, gRPC and Kafka events for communication between our payment and inventory services”
- “Design a saga for an order checkout that spans three services with compensating actions”
- “Suggest circuit breaker and retry settings for calls from our API gateway to a flaky downstream service”

Add it to your agent
Claude Code (all projects)
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip microservices-patterns.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)
mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip microservices-patterns.zip -d .claude/skills/Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Describe your current system, team size and traffic so the agent can judge whether microservices fit before proposing a split.
- Ask for trade-offs explicitly, since the skill's patterns come with costs such as eventual consistency and operational complexity.
- Point the agent at your real code or diagrams so recommendations match your actual service boundaries.
