What it does
When you ask why a number changed or doesn't match what you expected, the agent follows a structured investigation: it confirms the metric definition and data source, measures the size and timing of the change, breaks it down by likely drivers, and checks whether those drivers really explain it. It ends by stating what is verified, what is only likely, what remains unresolved, and what to check next. It also points to related skills for business context, data quality checks, or recommendations.
Great for
- Analysts investigating a sudden drop or spike in a KPI
- Teams reconciling two dashboards or reports that disagree
- Data-savvy product or business owners who want a rigorous explanation of a metric change
Skip it if
- Quick one-number lookups with no need for explanation (the workflow is heavier than necessary)
- Situations where the agent has no access to the actual source data, since it may then mislead with guesses; it is designed to stop and ask for the required source instead
- Making business decisions on its own; the skill explains movements but is not a substitute for human judgement on recommendations
Try asking
- “Why did our weekly active users drop 12% last week compared with the prior four weeks?”
- “Dashboard A shows revenue $2.1M but the finance table shows $1.9M. Figure out why they differ.”
- “Which segments and regions drove the increase in churn this quarter?”
- “Diagnose the spike in checkout errors starting Tuesday and whether it was broad or localized.”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Give the exact metric name, time window, and comparison baseline up front so the agent does not have to guess.
- Connect the warehouse or semantic layer you trust most; the skill prefers authoritative sources and will ask if one is missing.
- Ask for the sized list of drivers and the residual unexplained amount, and review the stated assumptions before acting on conclusions.
