Compose Next Workflow

Runs a gated multi-step feature workflow (grill, spec, implement, verify, review) only when explicitly requested

What it does

When a user explicitly asks for it (by typing /compose-next, naming the skill, or clearly requesting this workflow), the agent follows a structured process for larger changes: it settles requirements through one-question-at-a-time decisions, sets up an isolated git worktree on a new branch, writes a single feature design document with tasks and acceptance criteria, then implements, verifies and reviews the work. Without an explicit request, the agent is told to do the work directly without this process.

Great for

  • Developers doing multi-step feature work, bug fixes or refactors that need a written design and task list
  • Teams that want changes isolated in a git worktree and documented in a spec file before merge
  • Users who want a repeatable review-and-delivery process for non-trivial changes

Skip it if

  • Quick one-shot edits or single-file tweaks, which the skill itself says need no orchestration overhead
  • Pure question answering, where the workflow adds unnecessary steps
  • Repositories where the agent creating worktrees, folders under docs/ and branches is unwanted, since it writes files and runs git commands in the project

Try asking

  • “/compose-next add CSV export to the reports page”
  • “Use the compose-next workflow to refactor the auth middleware”
  • “Run compose-next for this bug fix, with a spec and review before merge”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    compose-next.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip compose-next.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip compose-next.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Invoke it explicitly by name or with /compose-next; the skill will not start on task size alone.
  • State 'without worktree' or 'without spec' up front if you want to skip those gates.
  • Check the generated docs/compose/spec file and the worktree branch before merging.
