What it does

This skill gives the AI agent a reference playbook for Linkerd, a lightweight service mesh that runs alongside applications on Kubernetes clusters and encrypts and manages traffic between them. Once installed, the agent can write the configuration files and command-line steps for installing Linkerd, enabling automatic encryption between services, splitting traffic for canary releases, setting retries and timeouts, and restricting which services may talk to which. It also suggests commands for checking, monitoring and debugging a mesh. It is documentation and templates the agent draws on; it does not connect to a cluster by itself.

Great for

  • Platform or DevOps engineers adopting Linkerd on Kubernetes
  • Developers who need example YAML for ServiceProfiles, TrafficSplits or ServerAuthorization policies
  • Teams planning zero-trust networking between microservices

Skip it if

  • People who do not run Kubernetes, since Linkerd is built for it and the skill gives no guidance for other platforms
  • Production changes made without review, because the templates are generic examples (for instance an allow rule for a 10.0.0.0/8 network) that must be adapted and tested before applying to a live cluster
  • Users expecting the agent to run installs automatically; the skill only describes commands, and any execution depends on the agent environment and the user's own cluster access

Try asking

  • “Write the Linkerd install steps for my Kubernetes cluster and check it is healthy”
  • “Create a ServiceProfile with retries and a 5s timeout for my orders service”
  • “Set up a 10% canary traffic split between my-service stable and canary”
  • “Write ServerAuthorization rules so only the frontend service account can call my API”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    linkerd-patterns.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip linkerd-patterns.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip linkerd-patterns.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Check the CLI version matches your cluster, as the skill advises, and run linkerd check --pre before installing
  • Review every generated YAML and kubectl apply command in a test cluster before using production
  • Ask the agent to adapt the example names, namespaces and CIDR ranges to your own environment
