What it does

This skill gives the agent a detailed reference for Istio, a tool that controls how requests flow between services in a Kubernetes cluster. Once installed, the agent can write the configuration files that split traffic between versions (for canary or blue-green releases), set timeouts and retries, add circuit breakers, mirror traffic for testing, and inject faults for chaos testing. It also suggests the matching debugging commands. The agent writes configuration text; it does not apply it to a cluster by itself.

Great for

  • Platform or DevOps engineers running Istio in production who want quick, correct YAML for routing and resilience policies
  • Teams planning a canary or progressive rollout of a service in a service mesh
  • Developers learning which Istio resource (VirtualService, DestinationRule, Gateway, ServiceEntry) does what

Skip it if

  • People who do not use Kubernetes or Istio: the templates will not apply to other meshes or plain servers
  • Copy-pasting the templates into production unchanged: they use example names, namespaces and weights, and mirroring or fault injection can affect real users if misapplied

Try asking

  • “Create an Istio canary config that sends 10% of my-service traffic to the canary subset”
  • “Write a VirtualService with 3 retries and a 10s timeout for my ratings service”
  • “Add a circuit breaker with outlier detection to my payments DestinationRule”
  • “Set up traffic mirroring from v1 to v2 of my API for testing”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Istio Traffic ManagementInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    istio-traffic-management.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip istio-traffic-management.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip istio-traffic-management.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give the agent your real service names, namespaces and subset labels so the output matches your cluster instead of the example bookinfo names
  • Ask the agent to run through the istioctl analyze step on any config before you apply it, and review the output yourself
  • Start canary weights small and check the advice in the skill about not mirroring to production before using mirror templates
