What it does

When installed, the agent follows a multi-step workflow to turn validated research ideas into a grant application for a chosen funding agency. It first surveys literature and checks novelty, then designs the proposal structure (aims, narrative), drafts the prose in the agency's expected format and language, and runs an external-style review and revision loop. It can also optionally mirror the layout of a past proposal or paper you point it to.

Great for

  • Researchers preparing a KAKENHI, NSF, NSFC, ERC or similar application who want a first structured draft
  • PIs who already have validated research ideas and want help organising them into a fundable narrative
  • Early-career researchers learning the structure of agency-specific proposals

Skip it if

  • Final submission without PI review: the skill states that every checkpoint needs explicit user confirmation, and grant content requires expert judgment and accuracy checks
  • Proposals describing results not yet obtained, since the skill is designed to argue for future work and could invite unsupported claims if inputs are weak
  • Users who need exact, current agency formatting rules: the skill relies on its own knowledge and web lookups, which may be outdated

Try asking

  • “Write a KAKENHI Start-up proposal on my graph neural network idea”
  • “Draft an NSF CAREER proposal in English from my research notes”
  • “Turn my sparse-sensing research direction into a NSFC Youth application in Chinese”
  • “Write grant proposal for ERC Starting Grant using my literature survey”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Grant Proposal WriterInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    grant-proposal.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip grant-proposal.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip grant-proposal.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • State the grant type and sub-type explicitly (e.g. NSF CAREER, NSFC Youth) and the output language to avoid defaults
  • Provide your validated research ideas and key literature up front so the aims are grounded in your own work
  • Verify all budget, eligibility, deadline and formatting details against the official agency guidelines before submitting
