What it does
Once installed, the agent can design Grafana monitoring dashboards for applications and infrastructure. It knows the common layouts (big-number summaries, trend graphs, detail tables), the RED and USE monitoring methods, and how to write Grafana dashboard JSON, Prometheus queries, template variables, provisioning files and alert rules. The skill is written as guidance and example snippets; it does not connect to your Grafana server or run any code by itself.
Great for
- Engineers who run Prometheus and Grafana and want dashboard JSON drafted quickly
- Platform or SRE teams building standard service or Kubernetes dashboards
- People new to observability who want a sensible dashboard structure
Skip it if
- Teams needing a live connection to their Grafana instance, since the skill only produces text and JSON and does not call Grafana's API (the files contain no such code)
- Anyone relying on the example alert or threshold values unchanged for production paging, because they are generic examples and the skill cannot verify them against your traffic or Grafana version
- Non-Prometheus data sources, since the examples assume Prometheus query syntax
Try asking
- “Create a Grafana dashboard JSON for monitoring request rate, error rate and p95 latency of my API”
- “Write Prometheus queries and variables to filter a dashboard by Kubernetes namespace and service”
- “Draft an SLO dashboard with an alert when error rate exceeds 5%”
- “Set up Grafana dashboard provisioning from a file path”

Add it to your agent
Claude Code (all projects)
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip grafana-dashboards.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)
mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip grafana-dashboards.zip -d .claude/skills/Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Give the agent your real metric names and labels so queries match your data rather than the example names
- Check the generated JSON against your Grafana version, since panel types like 'graph' are older and newer versions use different formats
- Review any alert rules and notification channels before enabling them, and test them with a non-paging channel first
