What it does

Once installed, the agent can list folders, search filenames and text inside files, and read chunks of files on a Google Cloud Filestore (NFS) network drive, without needing NFS client software or root access on your machine. It reaches the drive either through a small read-only Cloud Run web service it helps deploy, or through an existing VM in your network reached via IAP SSH. The skill tells the agent to read in small chunks so large files do not flood its context window.

Great for

  • Cloud engineers who need to check logs or config files on a Filestore share quickly
  • Operators troubleshooting backups or application output stored on NFS
  • Teams that want read-only access to Filestore without mounting it on their own machines

Skip it if

  • Modifying or deleting files: the skill is designed as read-only and is not for edits (reason: it does not write to the share)
  • Cloud Storage buckets, Persistent Disks or Cloud NetApp Volumes: the skill explicitly excludes these (reason: different storage systems)
  • Environments where agents must not run commands or touch cloud resources (reason: the skill runs Python scripts and gcloud commands that query your project)

Try asking

  • “Search the backup share for *.tar.gz files modified this week”
  • “Grep the app logs folder for FATAL or OutOfMemory errors”
  • “Show the last 50 lines of /backup/logs/app.log”
  • “Deploy the Cloud Run NFS bridge for the Filestore instance in my project”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Filestore NFS File BrowserInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 13 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    google-cloud-filestore-nfs-browser.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip google-cloud-filestore-nfs-browser.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip google-cloud-filestore-nfs-browser.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give the agent the project, instance and share path up front so it does not list unrelated projects
  • Ask for specific line ranges or small --tail values instead of whole files
  • Review deploy_bridge.sh and the IAM roles before deploying the Cloud Run service into a production VPC
