What it does

This skill is the starting point for building AI agents with Google's agents-cli toolkit. When installed, the agent can walk you through a one-time setup that installs the CLI and related specialized skills, then tells the agent which of those skills to use for each phase of work: defining the agent, scaffolding a project, writing code, evaluating, deploying to Google Cloud, publishing to Gemini Enterprise, and monitoring. It also asks you for your requirements and records them in a spec file before any code is written.

Great for

  • Developers starting a new AI agent project on Google Cloud using the Agent Development Kit (ADK)
  • Teams who want a guided, phase-by-phase workflow for building, testing and deploying agents
  • People who want an agent to install and configure agents-cli for them

Skip it if

  • Users who do not have a Google Cloud account or project, since most later steps deploy to Google Cloud (reason: the skill is only a routing entrypoint and will not work without that setup)
  • Anyone wanting to review or audit code before it runs, because the setup command downloads and executes third-party tooling (reason: it runs external commands with network access)

Try asking

  • “Create a new agent that answers customer questions and deploy it to Cloud Run”
  • “Set up agents-cli in my coding environment and verify the installation”
  • “Help me evaluate my ADK agent's answer quality before I publish it”
  • “Walk me through the lifecycle for building an agent with ADK”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Google Agents CLI OnboardingInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    google-agents-cli-onboarding.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip google-agents-cli-onboarding.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip google-agents-cli-onboarding.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Read the setup command before running it, and run it in a project directory you control
  • Keep the generated .agents-cli-spec.md file so later phases stay aligned with your original goals
  • Check the attribution file the skill references: it adds a usage-tracking label to gcloud and API calls
