What it does

Once installed, the agent follows a step-by-step guide to set up the official open-source Google Ads MCP Server, which lets an AI assistant such as Claude Code, Cursor or Gemini read your Google Ads campaigns and reporting metrics from plain-language questions. The skill checks that Python 3.12+ and pipx are present, helps install them if needed, checks that your five Google Ads API credentials are formatted correctly, installs the google-ads-mcp package with pipx, and verifies the install. It does not itself read your ads data; that happens through the MCP server after setup.

Great for

  • Developers who want their AI assistant to query Google Ads campaigns through natural language
  • Ad managers with a Manager (MCC) account who need a connected reporting assistant
  • Users who already have Google Ads API credentials and want guided installation

Skip it if

  • People who do not yet have Google Ads API credentials (the skill tells you to stop and use a separate quickstart skill first)
  • Users who want a non-technical, one-click setup, since it requires terminal commands, Python and OAuth configuration
  • Anyone wanting unvetted third-party servers, which the skill explicitly discourages

Try asking

  • “Help me connect Claude Code to my Google Ads account so I can ask about campaign performance”
  • “Walk me through installing the google-ads-mcp server with pipx on my Mac”
  • “Check whether my Python and pipx versions are ready for the Google Ads MCP server”
  • “Explain which Google Ads customer ID to use if my login is a Manager account”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Google Ads MCP SetupInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    google-ads-api-mcp-setup.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip google-ads-api-mcp-setup.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip google-ads-api-mcp-setup.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Keep your Developer Token, Client Secret and Refresh Token private and store them securely; the skill requires them but does not describe secure storage
  • Enter customer IDs as 10 digits with no hyphens, for example 1234567890
  • Start with the stable PyPI install; only use the GitHub development version if you specifically need it
