What it does

When you ask an AI agent to write or improve Go tests, this skill gives it a set of Go-specific testing conventions to follow. The agent will favour table-driven tests, use helper functions marked with t.Helper(), clean up resources with t.Cleanup(), run the race detector, check coverage, write benchmarks, and separate integration tests with build tags. It is a guide of patterns and example code, not a tool that runs anything by itself.

Great for

  • Go developers who want an AI assistant to produce tests in standard Go style
  • Teams setting up test infrastructure, CI race detection or coverage checks for a Go project
  • Engineers debugging flaky Go tests or optimising slow test suites

Skip it if

  • Projects not written in Go, since the patterns and commands are Go-specific
  • Teams that expect the skill to enforce coverage thresholds: the shown threshold command is a grep example and may not behave as intended, so verify it before relying on it

Try asking

  • “Write table-driven unit tests for my ValidateEmail function in Go”
  • “Add a race-detection step to our GitHub Actions workflow for this Go service”
  • “Set up integration tests with build tags and a Postgres test container”
  • “Add benchmarks to compare the performance of my parser before and after a change”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    golang-testing.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip golang-testing.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip golang-testing.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Ask the agent to run go test -race ./... after changes so you can see results directly in your project
  • Review any generated coverage-threshold script, since the example grep pattern is fragile
  • Provide your existing test files so the agent matches your project's naming and package conventions
