What it does

When installed, the agent follows a structured workflow for taking an application and getting it running on Google Kubernetes Engine for the first time. It assesses the app's language, dependencies, configuration and health endpoints, drafts a container build (Dockerfile or Cloud Native Buildpacks), pushes the image to Artifact Registry, and writes a Kubernetes Deployment and Service with security settings such as non-root users, probes, resource limits and at least two replicas. It also includes a sample Node.js app and a hardened manifest as reference material, and points to related skills for scaling, observability and security.

Great for

  • Developers deploying an app to GKE for the first time
  • Teams standardising a production-ready baseline for new GKE workloads
  • Engineers who need a Kubernetes manifest that follows security best practices

Skip it if

  • General GKE cluster administration or upgrades; the skill itself says to use gke-basics or gke-upgrades instead
  • Anyone running generated commands against a production cluster without reviewing them first, since the skill can deploy and apply manifests to live infrastructure

Try asking

  • “Containerize this Node.js app and deploy it to my GKE cluster for the first time”
  • “Write a production-ready Deployment and Service manifest for my Go API with probes and resource limits”
  • “Assess my Python service for GKE onboarding and tell me what needs changing”
  • “Set up Artifact Registry and push a container image for my GKE app”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 7 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    gke-app-onboarding.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip gke-app-onboarding.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip gke-app-onboarding.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Review every gcloud, kubectl or MCP apply command before the agent runs it, especially against a live cluster; the skill can change real infrastructure.
  • Point the agent at a non-production cluster or namespace first to check the generated manifest.
  • Ask the agent to explain any security setting it omits, since the skill expects a hardened pod spec by default; also note it references other skills (gke-manifest-generation, gke-workload-scaling, etc.) that are not included in these files.
