What it does
Once installed, the agent knows how to take a language model, convert it to the GGUF file format used by llama.cpp, and compress it (quantize) to 2-8 bit versions that need less memory. It can also write commands and Python code to run those models locally on laptops, desktops, or Apple Silicon Macs, and to start a local OpenAI-compatible server. The skill is a set of instructions and example commands rather than a tool that does the work itself.
Great for
- Developers who want to run open-weight models on consumer hardware without a dedicated NVIDIA GPU
- Mac users with Apple Silicon who want Metal-accelerated local inference
- Engineers choosing a quantization level (for example Q4_K_M) to balance file size and quality
Skip it if
- Maximum-accuracy deployment on NVIDIA servers, where the skill itself suggests AWQ, GPTQ or TensorRT-LLM instead (those trade-offs are outside this skill)
- Non-technical users who have never built software or used a terminal, since the workflows assume compiling llama.cpp and running shell commands
- Working with models whose licences forbid conversion or redistribution, since the skill does not check licence terms
Try asking
- “Convert my Hugging Face model to GGUF and quantize it to Q4_K_M for my MacBook”
- “Create an importance matrix and produce Q4_K_M, Q5_K_M and Q8_0 versions of this model”
- “Write a Python script using llama-cpp-python to chat with my local GGUF model”
- “Start a local OpenAI-compatible llama-server on port 8080 with GPU layers offloaded”

Add it to your agent
Claude Code (all projects)
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip gguf.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)
mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip gguf.zip -d .claude/skills/Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Start with Q4_K_M as the default; use an importance matrix (imatrix) when going below 4 bits for better quality
- Check the model's licence on Hugging Face before converting and redistributing it, and review every shell command the agent proposes since they download and build software and may use 0.0.0.0 to expose a server on your network
- Use the bundled troubleshooting and advanced-usage references when builds or conversions fail
