What it does

Once a coding task is done and the tests pass, the agent follows a fixed routine for wrapping up the git branch. It re-runs the test suite, works out whether it is in a normal repo, a git worktree, or a detached HEAD, and asks which base branch the work came from. It then offers a short menu: merge locally, push and open a pull request, or keep the branch as-is. Deleting work only happens if the user explicitly types a confirmation word.

Great for

  • Developers using an AI agent to finish a feature branch and get it merged or into a pull request
  • Teams that want the agent to pause for a human decision before merging or deleting anything

Skip it if

  • Projects with no git repository or no automated tests, since the routine assumes both exist
  • Anyone who wants the agent to merge or delete without being asked, because the skill is designed to wait for a human choice

Try asking

  • “I've finished the login feature and the tests pass. Help me wrap up the branch.”
  • “Finish this branch and open a pull request against main.”
  • “Merge my finished work back into the base branch locally after checking tests.”
  • “Walk me through the options for this worktree before I decide what to do with it.”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Finish a Development BranchInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    finishing-a-development-branch.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip finishing-a-development-branch.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip finishing-a-development-branch.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Make sure the test suite is green on the exact tree you want to integrate before invoking the skill.
  • Answer the base-branch question carefully, since the skill notes that merging into the wrong base is hard to undo.
  • Review the file list shown before choosing to delete any uncommitted worktree files.
