What it does

Once installed, the agent can take the technical diagrams you provide for a patent application, read each one, list the labelled components and how they connect, and assign reference numerals (such as 100, 102, 200) in a consistent numbering series per figure. It then writes standard drawing description sentences in Chinese or English and an index table linking each numeral to a claim element, flagging any claim element that has no matching figure or numeral. It does not draw or edit the figures themselves.

Great for

  • Patent drafters preparing drawing descriptions (附图说明) for CN, US or EP filings
  • Inventors who already have diagrams and need consistent numeral tables matched to their claims
  • Patent agents checking that every claimed element is shown in a figure

Skip it if

  • Generating data plots or charts from numbers, since the skill is for technical patent diagrams only (the description says a different skill handles that)
  • Legal sign-off on a patent: the output is a drafting aid and must be reviewed by a qualified patent professional, as errors in numerals or claim mapping can weaken an application
  • Projects without a patent/ folder containing INVENTION_DISCLOSURE.md and CLAIMS.md, because the skill relies on those files to map components

Try asking

  • “Describe the figures in patent/figures/ for my CN application and write the 附图说明 in Chinese”
  • “Assign reference numerals to the diagrams I uploaded and build a numeral index matched to CLAIMS.md”
  • “Check whether every element in my claims is covered by at least one figure and flag the gaps”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Patent Figure DescriptionsInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    figure-description.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip figure-description.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip figure-description.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Put all figures in patent/figures/ with clear filenames, and make sure INVENTION_DISCLOSURE.md and CLAIMS.md are up to date before running it
  • Review the generated numeral index against your specification, since the skill requires every numeral to be explained there and does not check that itself
  • Ask for jurisdiction explicitly (CN or US/EP) so the description format matches your filing
