What it does

This skill teaches an AI agent how to use FAISS, an open-source library from Meta for finding the most similar items in very large collections of numeric vectors (the embeddings that represent text, images or other content). Once installed, the agent can write Python code that builds different kinds of search indexes (exact, approximate, memory-saving), saves and reloads them, uses GPUs, and plugs them into LangChain or LlamaIndex. It is a search engine component, not a full database, so it does not store metadata or filter by fields on its own.

Great for

  • Python developers building a retrieval or recommendation feature over many embeddings
  • Data teams running batch similarity search or clustering on large vector datasets
  • Engineers who need low-latency search and have GPUs available

Skip it if

  • Projects that need metadata filtering or a full database with updates and access control, since FAISS only does pure vector search and the skill itself recommends other tools for those cases
  • Small prototypes where an exact search over a few thousand items is enough and the extra setup adds no value
  • Non-technical users looking for a finished app, because this only teaches code patterns and requires a Python environment

Try asking

  • “Write a Python script that builds a FAISS index over my 2 million product embeddings and returns the top 10 matches for a query vector”
  • “Compare Flat, IVF and HNSW index types for my dataset and suggest which to use”
  • “Save my FAISS index to disk and show me how to reload it in a new session”
  • “Connect a FAISS vector store to LangChain using OpenAI embeddings”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    faiss.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip faiss.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip faiss.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Specify your dataset size, dimensions and whether you need GPU, so the agent can pick an index type from the skill's guidance
  • Review any pickle-based load code before running it; the LangChain example sets allow_dangerous_deserialization=True, which can execute untrusted data if the index file is not trusted
  • Ask the agent to benchmark index options on a sample of your own data, since the accuracy and speed figures in the skill are general approximations
