What it does

When you ask about a library, framework, or API (such as Next.js, Prisma, or Supabase), this skill tells the agent to first look up the matching library in Context7, a documentation service connected through MCP (a standard way to plug external tools into an agent). The agent then reads the current docs and answers from them rather than from what it remembers from training, which can be out of date.

Great for

  • Developers asking setup or configuration questions about fast-changing frameworks
  • Anyone writing code against a specific library version and needing accurate API details
  • Teams that already have the Context7 MCP server configured in Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex

Skip it if

  • Users without the Context7 MCP server installed, since the skill cannot fetch docs without it
  • General programming questions unrelated to a named library, where the lookup adds delay without benefit
  • Situations where questions contain secrets: the skill sends the user's question to an external service, so secrets must be redacted first

Try asking

  • “How do I configure Next.js middleware? Check the current docs.”
  • “Write a Prisma query that loads posts with their authors, using the latest API.”
  • “What are the Supabase auth methods available right now?”
  • “Show me how to use React 19 features with a code example from the docs.”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    documentation-lookup.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip documentation-lookup.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip documentation-lookup.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Name the library and version explicitly (for example, React 19 or Next.js 15) so the agent can pick a version-specific documentation ID.
  • Remove API keys, passwords, and tokens from your question before asking, since the question is sent to Context7.
  • If the first answer seems unclear, ask the agent to check the docs again with a more specific question; the skill limits lookups to three calls per question.
