What it does

This skill gives the AI agent a set of Docker best practices to follow when you work on containerised projects. Once installed, the agent can write or review docker-compose.yml files, multi-stage Dockerfiles, network and volume layouts, and hardening settings such as non-root users and dropped capabilities. It documents patterns and example configuration; it does not itself run containers or change your files.

Great for

  • Developers setting up a local multi-service app (web app, database, cache) with Docker Compose
  • Teams reviewing Dockerfiles for image size and security before production
  • Engineers moving from local development to a container-based workflow

Skip it if

  • People with no Docker experience who expect a turnkey deployment; the skill assumes familiarity with containers and YAML
  • Production deployments without review: the examples (for instance a 'read_only' or 'restart: always' setting, or a Postgres password of 'postgres') are development defaults and must be adapted

Try asking

  • “Set up a docker-compose file for a Node app with Postgres and Redis”
  • “Review my Dockerfile for security and image size problems”
  • “Explain how to stop my database being reachable from the public internet in Compose”
  • “Write a multi-stage Dockerfile with separate dev and production targets”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    docker-patterns.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip docker-patterns.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip docker-patterns.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Ask for the pattern that matches your stack (the examples are Node.js-focused) and state whether the target is development or production.
  • Review any generated config before running it, especially credentials, ports and privilege settings.
  • Keep secrets out of Dockerfiles and git; ask the agent to use env files or Docker secrets as shown in the skill.
