What it does

This skill gives an AI agent a set of structured creativity methods drawn from cognitive science, such as combining concepts from distant fields, reframing a problem's assumptions, and reasoning by structural analogy. When you ask for new research directions, the agent works through these methods step by step instead of offering generic brainstorming. It is meant to produce raw, structurally sound ideas that you can then evaluate further.

Great for

  • PhD students or researchers who feel stuck within one subfield and want cross-field research directions
  • Research leads preparing an ideation session or retreat who want a systematic creativity process
  • Developers exploring non-incremental approaches to a hard algorithmic or ML problem

Skip it if

  • Structured project brainstorming workflows; the skill itself says to use the separate brainstorming-research-ideas skill for that
  • Executing a well-defined research problem, since it is only for ideation
  • Literature surveys; the skill points to a separate literature-review skill for that. Ideas generated this way still need checking against existing work

Try asking

  • “Use creative-thinking-for-research to find novel directions combining evolutionary biology with distributed caching.”
  • “Apply the problem reformulation framework to my current claim that we need faster training for large models.”
  • “Run a bisociation cross-product matrix between immune systems and fault-tolerant networking for my research topic.”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    creative-thinking-for-research.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip creative-thinking-for-research.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip creative-thinking-for-research.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give the agent two or three domains you know reasonably well, since the bisociation method works best with familiar concepts.
  • Ask the agent to apply the self-check questions to each idea, so weak metaphorical connections are filtered out.
  • Pair this skill with the brainstorming skill: use this one to generate raw insight, then the brainstorm workflow to structure and evaluate it.
