What it does
This is a set of written instructions that tells an AI agent to follow the C++ Core Guidelines (a widely used community rulebook for C++) when writing, reviewing, or refactoring C++ code. Once installed, the agent favours const and constexpr, smart pointers and RAII for resource handling, explicit interfaces, return values over output parameters, and Rule of Zero/Five class design, and it explains which rule it is applying. The skill contains only guidance and code examples; it does not run anything itself.
Great for
- C++ developers who want consistent, modern (C++17/20/23) code from an AI assistant
- Teams reviewing C++ pull requests against a shared standard
- Developers refactoring older C++ code toward safer idioms
Skip it if
- Non-C++ projects, where the rules do not apply
- Legacy C codebases that cannot adopt modern C++ features, as the guidance would not fit
- Embedded or bare-metal work where some guidelines conflict with hardware constraints; the file itself says to adapt selectively
Try asking
- “Review this C++ class for ownership and resource-safety problems against the Core Guidelines.”
- “Refactor this function to return a struct instead of using output parameters.”
- “Should I use enum class or a plain enum here? Explain using the C++ Core Guidelines.”
- “Rewrite this class hierarchy with a virtual destructor and override specifiers.”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Name the specific file or class and say whether you want a review, a rewrite, or an explanation, so the agent applies the relevant rule sections.
- Ask the agent to cite the rule numbers (for example P.8 or C.21) so you can check its reasoning against the official guidelines.
- Treat suggestions as guidance: confirm changes compile and pass your tests, since the skill itself does not run a compiler or linter.
