What it does
This skill teaches an AI agent how to decide who counts as a competitor before a competitive analysis begins. It makes the agent first collect a client's positioning brief (identity, offer, target clients, differentiator), then filter candidate competitors along generic axes such as size, specialization, pricing model and brand strength, and group them into Direct, Adjacent and Aspirational tiers. It also suggests where to look for them, such as portfolio sites, award showcases, company websites, LinkedIn and review directories.
Great for
- Agencies or freelancers starting a market landscape report for a client
- Strategists who need a defensible, pruned competitor list before scoring
- Students learning how to frame a competitive analysis
Skip it if
- Running the actual scoring or benchmarking itself, since the file says this skill precedes the benchmark-methodology skill and does not cover scoring
- Companies that already have a validated competitor set, because the skill adds scoping work that may not be needed
Try asking
- “Help me define the competitor set for my boutique brand design studio before we benchmark.”
- “Sort these candidate studios into Direct, Adjacent and Aspirational tiers for our client's positioning.”
- “What sources should I check to find competitors for a motion design agency?”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Provide the client's positioning brief up front; the skill tells the agent not to proceed without it.
- Use the skill's suggested sources as a guide, but check the agent's findings yourself since it does not browse in these files.
- Treat this as the first step and run the benchmarking skill afterwards for scoring.
