What it does
This skill teaches an AI coding agent a disciplined process for making code easier to read and maintain while keeping its behavior exactly the same. When asked to simplify, the agent first checks why the code was written the way it was, then looks for deep nesting, unclear names, nested ternaries, duplicated logic and unnecessary comments, and makes changes only when it is confident behavior is preserved. It also follows the project's existing conventions and avoids over-simplifying or making unrelated changes.
Great for
- Developers who have working code that has become hard to read or maintain
- Teams doing code review who want cleanup suggestions that keep behavior intact
- Developers who want an AI agent to tidy one function or module without touching the rest of the project
Skip it if
- Code that is still broken or whose purpose nobody understands yet, because the skill tells the agent to understand the code first and changes made without that understanding can introduce bugs
- Performance-critical code where a simpler-looking version could be measurably slower
- Throwaway code that is about to be rewritten anyway, since simplifying it wastes effort
Try asking
- “Simplify the nested if statements in this function without changing its behavior”
- “Clean up the messy validation logic in this module and keep the existing tests passing”
- “Review this pasted code and reduce its nesting and unclear variable names”
- “Refactor the duplicated logic across these recently changed files for clarity”

Add it to your agent
Claude Code (all projects)
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip code-simplification.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)
mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip code-simplification.zip -d .claude/skills/Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Make sure tests cover the code before asking for simplification, so behavior changes are caught
- Point the agent at a specific function or recently changed code to keep the diff small
- Ask the agent to explain why it made each change so you can review the reasoning
