What it does

When installed, this skill gives an AI agent a playbook for monitoring Google BigQuery, a cloud data warehouse. It tells the agent which tool to pick (a quick CLI or REST lookup for a single slow job, INFORMATION_SCHEMA SQL queries for historical patterns, or Cloud Monitoring for live alerts), how to write correctly scoped queries against BigQuery's system tables, and how to check slot contention, queue delays, reservation capacity and billing usage. It does not diagnose root causes on its own; it hands unclear problems to companion skills.

Great for

  • Data engineers investigating why a specific BigQuery job ran slowly
  • Platform or FinOps teams auditing reservation utilization and on-demand or capacity-based billing
  • Developers who need correct INFORMATION_SCHEMA query syntax for BigQuery telemetry

Skip it if

  • Vague problems with unknown causes; the description says to use the bigquery-troubleshooting skill first
  • Rewriting business logic SQL for speed or cost; the bigquery-optimization skill covers that
  • Running telemetry queries against production projects without checking cost, since INFORMATION_SCHEMA queries can consume slots and cost money

Try asking

  • “Why did job my-project:US.abc123 take 20 minutes? Check its performance insights and query plan.”
  • “Show me slot contention and queue latency in the us region over the last 7 days.”
  • “Analyze our reservation utilization and whether autoscaling is saturating.”
  • “Audit our on-demand compute and storage billable usage for last month.”
Step-by-step guide: how to use BigQuery ObservabilityInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 11 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    bigquery-observability.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip bigquery-observability.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip bigquery-observability.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give the agent the project ID, region and job ID up front so it can use the cheap single-job lookup first.
  • Use a narrow time window in INFORMATION_SCHEMA queries to limit slot use and cost.
  • Confirm the query location matches the region qualifier, or BigQuery will return a not-found error.
