What it does

Once installed, the agent checks a website or digital experience against a supplied set of reference pages, screenshots, copy, images, videos and code, looking for overlaps that could signal copying. It lists evidence-backed red flags with severity, separates facts from guesses, and proposes concrete fixes such as rewriting copy or replacing images. It is designed to avoid declaring legal plagiarism from visual similarity alone. A bundled Python helper can also scan files and Git history for exact duplicates, reused filenames, text overlap and repeated numbers to give the agent leads to review.

Great for

  • Agencies or studios checking a new client site for accidental copying before launch
  • Teams that need a documented originality review of a site built from inspiration references
  • Developers reviewing a repository for leftover copied assets or text, including in its history

Skip it if

  • Legal clearance: the skill explicitly does not give legal opinions, and its output is not a substitute for a lawyer or formal IP review
  • Auditing a site with no reference materials supplied, since the comparison needs references to work against

Try asking

  • “Audit this site folder against the reference captures in /refs and list red flags by severity”
  • “Check the git history of this repo for copied images or text from the reference URLs”
  • “Compare our homepage copy and numbers with the competitor pages we supplied and suggest rewrites”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Reference Originality AuditInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 4 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    audit-reference-originality.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip audit-reference-originality.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip audit-reference-originality.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Supply the full reference set (full-page captures, videos, copy) up front; the skill stops and reports gaps rather than passing partial reviews
  • Run the inventory script on a copy or in a temporary output path, and review its JSON output yourself before acting on it
  • Treat the verdict as a checklist for human review, not a clearance certificate
