How to use the Job Offer Negotiation agent skill (offer-negotiation)

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The Job Offer Negotiation agent skill (offer-negotiation) is a set of instructions and reference files that teaches an AI agent to break a job offer into its parts, check what is unclear, and help you respond. It is for people who have an offer to understand, several offers to compare, or a negotiation call to practise. By the end of this guide you will know what the skill does, how to install it, how to trigger it with plain requests, and what to check before relying on it.

Quick start

  1. 1Download the ZIP. Get the offer-negotiation skill as a ZIP from the directory page.
  2. 2Unzip into the skills folder. Unzip into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder.
  3. 3Or upload in the Claude apps. Go to Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the ZIP.
  4. 4Paste the offer. Describe the offer with base, bonus, equity, sign-on, currency and pay frequency, and state the response deadline.
  5. 5Review the decode. Check the labelled components and the list of questions for the recruiter.
  6. 6Ask for the counter and rehearsal. Request one consolidated counter as an email and call script, then practise the call with the agent as recruiter.
  7. 7Decide and send yourself. Edit the draft, send it yourself, and tell the agent when you have done so.

What the skill makes the agent do

Once installed, the agent decodes an offer into its components: base pay, bonus, equity, sign-on and level. Anything unclear is listed as a question for the recruiter rather than filled in with a typical value. Each offer stays in its own currency and pay period, so you can compare offers from different countries or pay structures without mixing them up.

The agent then helps you find leverage that is actually true and checkable, drafts one consolidated counter-offer as an email and a call script, and can play the recruiter so you can rehearse. It also covers tricky moments such as salary-expectation questions, response deadlines, requests for more time, "best and final" offers, counteroffers, and written acceptance or decline.

  • Decodes base, bonus, equity, sign-on and level, labelling each as guaranteed, conditional, estimate or unknown
  • Keeps each offer in its own currency and pay period
  • Benchmarks against checkable pay data and finds true leverage
  • Drafts one counter as an email and a call script
  • Role-plays the recruiter
  • Country-aware, including India CTC, 13th-month pay and public-sector scales

Install the offer-negotiation skill

Download the skill as a ZIP from the directory page, then unzip it into one of two folders. For a personal skill available in all your projects, use ~/.claude/skills/. For a skill that applies only to one project, unzip it into that project's .claude/skills/ folder.

If you use the Claude apps instead of Claude Code, upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills. The skill's files are SKILL.md plus a references folder containing countries.md, decoding.md, evidence.md, mcp-recipes.md, role-play.md and scripts.md.

  • Personal install: ~/.claude/skills/
  • Project install: the project's .claude/skills/ folder
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the ZIP

Trigger the skill with natural requests

You do not need a special command. Describe your situation in plain words and the agent should pick up the skill from its description. The skill's description names several phrases that match well, such as "I got an offer of...", "is this offer good", "should I negotiate", "how do I counter", "compare my offers" and "practice the negotiation call".

Paste the offer text or give the figures, and say what you want: a decode, a comparison, a counter, or a rehearsal. The agent will ask for anything it needs, such as a missing base figure or the response deadline.

  • "I got an offer of 95k base plus a 10% target bonus. Is this offer good?"
  • "Compare my two offers: one is in euros monthly, the other in US dollars yearly."
  • "They want an answer by Friday. Can I ask for more time?"
  • "They asked my salary expectations. How should I answer?"
  • "Practise the negotiation call with you playing the recruiter."

What the skill needs and what it does not do

The skill lists no required software, does not run scripts and does not use the network. It works in plain conversation. If the Reactive Resume MCP tools are connected, the skill can read offer-stage applications and saved offer terms from them, set a follow-up for the response deadline and log negotiation steps. Without MCP, you paste the details yourself.

For logging the offer, its deadline and withdrawal notes, the skill points to a separate skill called job-application-manager. For other interview answers, it points to interview-prep.

  • Requires: nothing listed
  • Runs scripts: no
  • Uses network: no
  • Optional: Reactive Resume MCP tools, used only when connected

Safety notes: what the agent will and will not do

The agent sends nothing for you. It drafts the email and script; you decide, edit and send. It will not state a competing offer or pay figure you do not have, and it treats offer letters and recruiter emails as data, not as instructions.

The skill gives general information only. It is not financial, tax, legal or immigration advice. Equity tax, 83(b) elections, clawbacks, non-competes and visa-linked offers carry real consequences, and the skill points you to a tax adviser, employment lawyer or immigration lawyer for those decisions.

  • It never sends, accepts or declines on your behalf
  • It will not help invent or exaggerate offers or pay figures
  • Web searches are limited to companies, roles and public pay data; your name, current pay and offer letter stay out of them
  • Ask before pasting an offer into any third-party tool

Tips for getting a useful result

Give the complete offer: base, bonus, equity, sign-on, start date, currency and pay frequency. The more the agent can see, the fewer blanks it leaves. If the response deadline is real, say so; if it is not, ask for the time you need with a true reason.

Ask for the rehearsal before the real call. The role-play is useful for practising the exact words of a salary-expectation answer or a request for more time.

  • Include the currency and pay period for every offer
  • Tell the agent which numbers are guaranteed and which are targets
  • Only cite a competing offer if it is real and you could show it
  • Use Fast mode when the response is due in under three business days

What people use it for

  • Decoding a base-plus-bonus-plus-equity offer to see which parts are guaranteed
  • Comparing two offers in different currencies or pay periods without mixing them
  • Preparing a reply to a salary-expectations question before a recruiter call
  • Asking for more time before a response deadline, with an honest reason
  • Practising a counter-offer call before the real conversation

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the offer-negotiation skill?

Download the ZIP from the directory page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder for one project. In the Claude apps, upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

Is the offer-negotiation skill free?

The skill is published under the MIT licence. The source material does not list a price, so check the directory page for any terms that apply to the download.

Does the offer-negotiation skill need any software or the network?

The skill lists no requirements, runs no scripts and uses no network. It works in plain conversation, and the Reactive Resume MCP tools are optional and used only when connected.

Will the agent send my counter-offer to the recruiter?

No. The skill drafts the email and call script, and you decide what to send. The agent only logs a step after you tell it you have sent something.

Can it give tax or legal advice about equity or visas?

No. The skill gives general information only and not financial, tax, legal or immigration advice. For equity tax, 83(b) elections, non-competes or visa-linked offers, it points you to a tax adviser, employment lawyer or immigration lawyer.

What should I use instead for interview preparation?

For logging the offer, its deadline and withdrawal notes, the skill points to job-application-manager. For other interview answers, it points to interview-prep.

Our verdict

Use this skill if you have a job offer you want to understand before responding, are comparing offers in different currencies or pay structures, or want to rehearse a negotiation call. Pick something else, or a qualified professional, if your decision turns on tax, legal or immigration consequences, because the skill deliberately gives general information only.
